Our take
A short, free, recognised grounding in content marketing. The badge is a credible line for a profile.

Good for: marketers and creators who want a free, recognised grounding in content marketing.

Skip if: you already work in content marketing, or you want deep specialist training.

It covers content marketing end to end — developing a content mission and editorial calendar, writing for each stage of the buyer's journey, repurposing across channels, and measuring performance — with an emphasis on storytelling and audience-first thinking. It is self-paced and practical.

It is foundational and HubSpot-flavoured, so it does not go deep into SEO, paid distribution or any one channel, and it leans on HubSpot's own framing; if you already work in content, or you want specialist depth, look elsewhere. HubSpot keeps it updated.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, genuinely and completely. HubSpot Academy certifications, including this one, cost nothing — you only need a free HubSpot account to enrol, watch the lessons, and sit the exam. There is no paywall on the certificate itself, which is unusual and a large part of why this credential is so widely taken by people entering marketing.

You work through a series of video lessons, then sit a single exam of sixty questions with three hours to complete it, needing 80% to pass. If you do not pass, you can retake it after a twelve-hour wait. The material covers content strategy, topic and keyword planning, creating content, and promoting and measuring it — the full content-marketing cycle.

Twelve months. After that it expires and you need to recertify, which HubSpot does deliberately because content-marketing practices shift over time. It is worth diarising the renewal if you list it on your profile or resume, since a lapsed certification is easy to forget about and looks less credible than a current one.

They overlap but aim at different things. The Inbound certification covers the broader inbound methodology — lead generation, SEO, and marketing automation across the funnel. This Content Marketing one drills specifically into creating, planning, and distributing content. If you want the wide philosophy, take Inbound; if your actual job is producing content, this one is the more directly useful of the two.

For a free credential, yes — it is one of the better free content-marketing certifications and is still listed as preferred on some marketing job postings. The real value, though, comes from applying it: write or improve an actual content asset off the back of it. The certificate opens a conversation; a portfolio of content you have genuinely produced is what carries weight.
