They aim at slightly different learners. Google's is gentler and better for a clean beginner career-entry, with clear role pathways and strong Linux, SQL, and Python basics. IBM's goes deeper technically and puts real enterprise tools like QRadar in your hands. A common recommendation is Google to get oriented and IBM to reinforce the technical depth — they complement rather than replace each other.
It builds credible, hands-on skills and a recognised IBM name, which helps, but no certificate alone lands the role. Entry-level security hiring is competitive and usually wants a broader security certification like CompTIA Security+, plus home-lab or project evidence you can talk through. Use this to gain real tool experience, then layer a vendor-neutral cert and practice on top.
Some basic IT familiarity — how networks and operating systems work — makes it far smoother, and it helps to be comfortable with a little Python. It is pitched at beginners to security specifically, not to computing in general, so people arriving with zero technical background tend to find the tool-heavy sections a steep first climb.
You can audit the course videos on Coursera for free, but the hands-on labs with tools like QRadar, the graded work, and the certificate require a Coursera subscription. Since the practical labs are the main reason to take this one, auditing alone misses much of what makes it worthwhile.
Plan for a few months. It is an eight-course program, and IBM's guidance lands around three to six months at a handful of hours a week, depending on your background.
