Good for: A clear, official first orientation to Google Cloud.

Skip if: You want deep hands-on engineering or you already know GCP basics.

It introduces and compares GCP's main compute and storage services and its resource- and policy-management tools — an official, clear orientation to the platform. Being foundational is both its strength and its ceiling: it's a sensible starting point, commonly taken before the Associate Cloud Engineer path, but it won't give you deep hands-on engineering, and if you already know the GCP basics you'll find little new.

Audit it free on Coursera; the course certificate needs a subscription (about $49/month) or Coursera Plus, with financial aid available. Be clear that this is not itself a Google Cloud certification — those are separate paid exams (the Associate Cloud Engineer exam is about $125). A solid orientation, kept current by Google (as of 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Auditing gives you the videos and readings, but the hands-on labs run through Google Cloud's Qwiklabs and are generally part of the paid, enrolled track rather than free audit. Since actually provisioning resources yourself is a selling point here, check whether you need the labs before relying on the free option.

It's a solid first step, and maps most directly toward the entry-level Cloud Digital Leader exam. It is not enough on its own for the Associate Cloud Engineer certification, which expects real hands-on skill — treat this as orientation before a cert-specific path.

Learn the one your target roles use. AWS has the largest job market, Azure dominates Microsoft-centric employers, and Google Cloud is strong in data and machine-learning-heavy companies. The core cloud concepts overlap heavily, so starting with Google Cloud doesn't lock you in.

It's genuinely introductory and, being Google-made, naturally presents Google Cloud favourably. That's fine for what it is — an orientation to the platform — but don't expect critical comparison or deep engineering; pair it with hands-on practice once the concepts land.
