Worth it if you work near AI decisions but do not build the systems — managers, execs, anyone who needs to talk sensibly with technical teams. It is free to audit and short.

Good for: non-technical professionals who want to understand AI and how it applies to their work.

Skip if: you want to build AI systems or write code.

Andrew Ng strips out the jargon and gives you the concepts and vocabulary that matter: what AI can and cannot do, how to spot a valuable project, how to structure a team, and the pitfalls that sink AI initiatives. It is strategy and judgment, not technique, which is exactly what a non-technical decision-maker needs.

It will not teach you to build anything — there is no coding or hands-on tooling — so if you want to actually make AI systems, start with a technical course instead. The certificate needs a paid Coursera subscription; the free audit covers the learning. The concepts are durable and stay relevant (as of 2026).

Partly. It predates the generative-AI wave, so it won't teach you about ChatGPT, large language models or today's AI tools directly. But its core — what AI can and can't do, and how to think about applying it in a business — has aged well. The strategic thinking is still sound even though the examples are pre-2020.

They're different jobs. This one builds a general mental model of AI and ML in business; Generative AI for Everyone, also from Andrew Ng, is the newer course focused on the ChatGPT era. If you want the timeless strategy foundation, take this; if you specifically want to understand and use today's generative tools, take that one — or do both, in that order.

Non-technical professionals and leaders — marketing, HR, product, operations — who need to reason about AI without building it. It's ideal for a team building shared AI literacy, giving everyone enough vocabulary to take part in strategy discussions. A data scientist won't be impressed by it, and that's fine: it isn't for them.

Not really — it's about understanding AI strategically, not hands-on tool use. For actually using ChatGPT and similar day to day, a practical course such as Google AI Essentials, or Ng's Generative AI for Everyone, fits better. Take this one for the mental model, those for the practice.
